Short answer
How do I ask for referrals, with AI's help?
To ask for referrals with AI's help, start with happy customers, use AI to write a short ask that names the exact kind of person you want to meet, and make it easy by offering a ready-to-forward note. A good referral ask is specific: "Who else do you know who runs a 10 to 50 truck fleet?" works far better than "Know anyone who might need us?" AI is great at writing the ask, the forwardable intro and the thank you, but the timing and the relationship are still yours.
Steps
- 1
Pick the right people to ask.
Customers who just had a win with you, told you they are happy, or have bought for years. Ask right after a good moment, like a delivery that went well or a renewal.
- 2
Describe your ideal referral.
Job title, type of company, size, and the problem. Be specific so their brain has a face to match.
- 3
Write the ask with AI.
Use the first prompt below. Keep it short and personal.
- 4
Give them a note to forward.
Most people want to help but do not want to write. Use the second prompt to write a short intro they can forward as is.
- 5
Follow up fast and say thanks.
Reach the referred person within a day, mention who sent you, and tell the person who referred you what happened.
Prompts you can copy
The referral ask
I want to ask a happy customer for a referral. Customer: [name, company, how long they have worked with us] The good thing that just happened: [like we delivered on time for their busy season, or they renewed] The kind of person I want to meet: [title, type of company, size, problem] Write a short ask under 70 words. Thank them for the specific thing. Then ask if they know one or two people like [ideal referral]. Offer to send a short note they can forward. Sound like a person, not a program. No "if you know anyone who could benefit". Give me a version for email and a version I can say on the phone.
The note they can forward
Write a short intro note my customer can forward to a friend, written as if from my customer. My customer: [name, company] Who they are sending it to: [the type of person] What I do: [one line] What I did for my customer: [real, specific result or experience they told me about] Under 60 words. Plain and casual. End with something like "worth a quick call with [my name]?" Use only what I wrote, no made up results.
Email to the person they referred
[Customer name] at [customer company] told me to reach out to [referred name], [title] at [company]. Why they thought of them: [reason] What I do: [one line] Write an email under 60 words. Mention [customer name] in the first line. Say why they connected us and one way I might help. End with one easy question about a time to talk. Do not oversell. Subject line: plain, 2 to 4 words.
The thank you
Write a short thank you to [customer name] for referring me to [referred name]. Say what happened next in one line: [what happened]. Under 40 words. Warm, not gushing.
Example
This is a made-up example.
Input: "Customer is Linda, office manager at a dental group with 4 clinics. We just finished moving all their phones over with no downtime. I want to meet office managers at other dental or medical groups with 3 to 10 locations."
A good ask on the phone:
"Linda, thanks again for being so easy to work with on the move, glad it went smooth. Quick ask, do you know one or two office managers at other dental or medical groups with a few locations? I can send you a short note to forward so you don't have to write anything."
Tips
- Ask for one or two names, not "anyone". Small asks get bigger answers.
- Ask out loud when you can. A referral ask on a call feels more natural than a cold email.
- Always close the loop with the person who referred you. They will refer again if they know it went well.
- Referrals should be your first calls of the day. A warm name is worth more than a cold list. See referrals.
What not to do
- Do not ask a customer who just had a problem with you. Fix it first.
- Do not write a fake quote from your customer. The forwardable note should use only what they actually said or agreed to.
- Do not email the referred person without saying who sent you. That is the whole reason they will read it.
- Do not ask the same customer every month.
FAQ
When is the best time to ask for a referral?
Right after a win. A smooth delivery, a renewal, a thank you email from them, or when they tell you something went well. That is when helping you feels natural.
Should I offer a reward for referrals?
Some businesses do, and some industries have rules about it. A real thank you and treating the referred person well matters more than a gift card.
What if they say they can't think of anyone?
Make it more specific. "Who did you meet at the last trade show?" or "Who runs the clinic across town?" A specific picture helps people remember names.
Can AI find referral opportunities in my customer list?
Yes. Paste your customer list with notes and ask AI which customers had recent wins and might be good to ask. Check its picks against what you know. More ideas are in the account manager prompts.
