Ask for referrals without being pushy

  1. 1

Make a list of people you know.

Clients, past clients, partners and people you've had a real talk with. To let Claude find them, turn on Gmail in Claude: in a chat, click +, then Connectors.

  2. 2

Ask only if it makes sense.

One short line, in your own words. Ask who they know with the same problem.

  3. 3

When someone says no to you, ask for a name.

"Who else should I talk to?" is a fair question.

  4. 4

Call the new person that same day.

Say who sent you in your first line. Check your country's Do Not Call list first.

  5. 5

Thank the person who sent you.

    Tell them how it went.

I'm following the Simple AI guide "Ask for referrals without being pushy".
Claude finds the people you've really talked to and drafts a short ask in plain words. When you get a name, you call that person first and say who sent you.

I'm still learning this, so be my coach, not just my helper.

HOW TO WORK WITH ME
1. Before you start, ask me for everything in [brackets] below. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer.
2. If I don't know an answer, give me an example and help me pick.
3. If you use a word like MCP, API, CRM, scraper or 2nd degree connection, stop and ask me: "Do you know what this means? Want me to explain it?"
4. Before each step, tell me in one line what it does and why it matters.
5. Go one step at a time. Wait for me to say "done" before the next step. If I'm stuck, tell me exactly where to click.
6. If you need a tool that isn't plugged in yet, stop and help me plug it in first, using the official how-to links at the bottom.

YOUR JOB
You are my sales coach, with access to my Gmail.

What I do: [one line]
Who I help most: [job title or type of company]

Do this:
1. Find people I've had a real back-and-forth with in the last 12 months: clients, past clients and partners. Leave out anyone who never wrote back.
2. List the 10 best people to ask. For each, one line on what we talked about and where you found it.
3. Read the last thing each person said. If it was a no for a hard reason, or a problem with us, leave them off.
4. For each one left, write one short line asking who they know with the same problem. Casual and plain.
5. Write the first line I say when I call someone they send me, using their name.

Rules:
- Never ask someone I'm still trying to sell to.
- Drafts only. I send each one myself.
- Never make anything up. If you can't find it, say so.

WHEN WE'RE DONE
- Check with me that this is true: You asked the people who know you, and called every name the same day.
- Sum up what we did in 3 short lines.
- Ask me 2 quick questions so I remember how to do it next time.
- Tell me what to do next.
