Short answer

How do I check if a phone number is real and likely to pick up before I call?

To check a phone number before you call, run your list through a phone check tool that tells you if each number is a mobile, a landline or an internet line, and how active it is. Try Trestle first: it costs about a cent and a half a number, has no monthly fee, and you can cut anything that scores 30 or below. Look at Optimal Dial only if you call execs who rarely pick up, skip TitanX unless you have 3 or more reps and a real budget, and skip ConnectRate for now. No paid links. No tool paid to be here.

Steps

  1. 1

Test it with your own list, not their demo.

Pull 200 numbers you were going to call this week anyway. A demo list is picked to look good. Yours is the one that matters.

  2. 2

Run the same list through the tool.

Save the line type and score for each number in a new column of your sheet or CRM.

  3. 3

    Check 50 contacts by hand.

Call or look up each one. Write down if it was the right person, a front desk, a dead line or a wrong number.

  4. 4

Compare the score to what happened.

Did the low scores really fail and the high scores really connect? A front desk can score high, because these tools check the line, not the person.

  5. 5

Pay month to month or pay as you go before you sign a yearly deal.

Trestle is pay as you go. Others ask for a monthly plan or a yearly contract, so start small.

  6. 6

Drop it if more than 20% is wrong.

That's Kevin Hopp's rule. If 1 in 5 of the numbers it calls good turn out bad, the tool is not saving you time.

The ranking

Trestle: try first

  • What it does: Tells you if a number is a mobile, landline or internet line, plus an activity score from 0 to 100.
  • Price: $0.015 a number for phone validation, no monthly fee, free start with no card (checked Oct 28, 2026).
  • Fits: Anyone loading numbers into a dialer.
  • Skip it if: You only send email.

Our review: Trestle, 4 out of 5

We used it as the last check before dialing and cut numbers scored 30 or below, which is what Trestle's own team told us to do. It checks the line, not the person, so a front desk number can score 100. Our key stopped working Sep 25 2026 and we haven't turned it back on yet.

What people say: G2: 5.0 out of 5 from 10 reviews (shown in a search result for G2's Trestle page, read Oct 28, 2026). SoftwareFinder: 5 out of 5 from 10 reviews (read Oct 28, 2026).

"Using this has been incredibly simple." (Arjun K. on SoftwareFinder)

Most common praise: easy to set up and a helpful team. Most common complaint: there are very few reviews to go on, and one summary said the dashboard reports are thin.

Optimal Dial: solid

  • What it does: Scores which numbers are likely to answer and watches for spam flags on your caller ID.
  • Price: Starter $245 a month (or $219 a month billed yearly), Growth $445, Scale from $895. About $0.22 down to $0.11 a credit, one number is 1 credit. No free trial, 14 day money back (checked Oct 28, 2026).
  • Fits: Calling execs who rarely pick up, like a CHRO or CTO.
  • Skip it if: Your list is small or your buyers answer the phone.

Our review: Optimal Dial

We tested it in a small pipeline test in Aug 2026. We have not run it at scale yet, so no rating from us.

Corey Leon, Coda, Aug 2026

What people say: G2 says there are not enough reviews of Optimal Dial to show a rating (G2 seller page, read Oct 28, 2026). We couldn't read public reviews for this one today. Most common praise and complaint: not enough public reviews to say.

TitanX: skip unless you have 3+ reps and budget

  • What it does: Scores who's likely to answer, plus a dialer.
  • Price: $375 a month per seat (Phone Intent) or $475 (Precision Dialer), paid yearly, 3 rep minimum (checked Oct 28, 2026).
  • Fits: Teams of 3 or more reps who can sign a yearly deal.
  • Skip it if: You're solo, or you want to pay month to month.

We haven't used this one yet.

What people say: G2: 4.9 out of 5 from 22 reviews (shown in a search result for G2's TitanX page, read Oct 28, 2026). We couldn't open the review text itself today, so no quotes. Most common praise: from the listing, teams buy it to raise how many calls connect. Most common complaint: we couldn't read enough reviews to say.

ConnectRate: skip for now

  • What it does: Grades numbers by how likely they are to pick up.
  • Price: We couldn't find a public price (checked Oct 28, 2026).
  • Fits: Nobody we'd point to yet.
  • Skip it if: You need a tool that works today.

Our review: ConnectRate

We tried it and dropped it in June 2026 because its API didn't work for us.

Check a sample of 50 numbers

PromptPaste into any AI
You are helping me test a phone check tool before I pay for it. I will paste 50 rows. Each row has: name, company, phone, the tool's line type, the tool's score, and what happened when I called (right person, front desk, voicemail, dead line, wrong person).

Make a short table that shows, for each score band (0 to 30, 31 to 70, 71 to 100), how many calls reached the right person and how many were bad. Then tell me in 3 plain sentences if the score matched real life, and if more than 20% of the numbers it called good were wrong.

Compare two tools on the same list

I ran the same [number] phone numbers through two tools: [Tool A] and [Tool B]. Here are the results side by side, plus what happened when I called: [paste rows].

Tell me which tool flagged more of the numbers that really turned out bad, which one wrongly cut good numbers, and the cost per good number for each if [Tool A] costs [price] and [Tool B] costs [price]. Keep it under 150 words and use plain words.

Questions to ask a sales rep before buying

I'm about to get on a call with a sales rep for [tool name], a tool that scores phone numbers before I call them. I run [number] reps who call [type of buyer].

Write 8 short questions I should ask. Cover: price per number, monthly minimums, contract length, refunds, how they score a number, how often the data updates, if I can test it on my own list first, and what happens to my data. Plain words, one line each.

FAQ

Can a phone check tool tell me if the right person will answer?

No. These tools check the line, not the person. A main office number can score high and still ring a front desk, so trust the call over the score.

What score should I cut at in Trestle?

Trestle's own team told us to cut numbers scored 30 or below. Test that cut on your own list and check 50 by hand.

Do I need a phone check if my data tool already says verified?

Yes, if you call a lot. A verified label is the data tool's guess. A quick line check costs very little next to a rep's time on dead numbers.

Which one should a solo seller start with?

Trestle, because it's pay as you go with no monthly fee. The others need a monthly plan or a yearly contract.
