Short answer
Should I use Instantly or Smartlead for cold email?
Try Instantly first. It sends cold email from many inboxes with warmup, we use it ourselves, and its Growth plan is $47 a month. Smartlead is solid and does the same job, starting a little cheaper at $39 a month, so test it if price matters most. Neither one fixes a bad list or bad copy, so check both before you send. No paid links. No tool paid to be here.
Steps
- 1
Test it with your own list, not their demo.
Load a small batch of real people you'd actually email.
- 2
Check 50 contacts by hand.
Look up each one or call them. Are they still at that company, and is the email right?
- 3
Pay month to month first.
Start on a monthly plan before you sign a yearly deal.
- 4
Drop it if more than 20% is wrong.
That's Kevin Hopp's rule. It goes for your list and for the tool's results.
- 5
Read your copy before you add leads.
In Instantly, adding leads to a live campaign starts sending right away. Check the email first.
- 6
Run the same test on both.
Same list size, same copy, same week. Then compare replies, not opens.

The short version
Both have fans and both have people upset about support and billing. The ratings tell you the tool works for a lot of people. They don't tell you it will work on your list. Your own test of 50 does.
Prompts you can copy
Check a sample of 50 contacts before you send
You are helping me check a cold email list before I load it. Here are 50 rows with name, title, company, website and email: [paste rows]. Flag any row where the email domain doesn't match the company website, the title isn't close to [the buyer title I want], or the email looks like a shared inbox like info@ or sales@. Give me a table with name, problem, and keep or drop. At the end, count the drops and tell me if more than 10 of the 50 are bad.
Compare two tools after a test
I sent the same email to two lists of the same size, one from Instantly and one from Smartlead. Here are my numbers for Instantly: [sent, bounced, replies, booked calls]. Here they are for Smartlead: [sent, bounced, replies, booked calls]. Make a short side by side. Work out bounce rate and reply rate for each. Then tell me which to keep in two sentences, and say if the test was too small to trust. Only use my numbers.
Write the questions to ask before buying
I'm picking a cold email tool. I'm a [your job] at a [type of company] and I plan to send about [number] emails a month. Write 8 short, plain questions to ask the company before I pay. Cover what the plan limits really are, warmup, what happens when I add leads to a live campaign, how to cancel, refunds, and how fast support answers. No fluff.

FAQ
Can I use both?
You can, but start with one. Two tools means two bills, two sets of inboxes and twice the setup.
Do I need warmup?
Instantly has warmup built in. Ask Smartlead how theirs works on your plan. New inboxes need time before they send at full speed, so plan for that before your first campaign.
Why did my campaign start sending before I was ready?
In Instantly, adding leads to a live campaign starts sending right away. Pause the campaign or check the copy before you add anyone.
Is cold email still worth it?
It works when you use a clean, small list and a short, plain email. If you also call, see our cold email prompts to keep your words the same across both.
